Habits of a Healthy Heart

True story. One day, a good-looking young man walked into his doctor’s office. While he was getting his checkup, the doctor explained how his cholesterol numbers were starting to reflect an unhealthy body. The doctor could see the man was not getting it, so the doctor got in his face and said, “Listen, I don’t want you to be the guy who looks real fit on the outside, but then one day falls over while running from a heart attack.”

Did you know that you can be blocked on the inside and look good on the outside? As a performance coach, my passion in life is for others to operate at their highest potential physically and emotionally so they can be and do all they were placed on this earth for. It’s simple…I am after lasting change. As a performance coach, I focus on an overall change, not just a quick fix!

When you begin fitness training at NAKOA Fitness and Physical Therapy, you are taken through an extensive assessment where we look at body composition, foundational movement patterns, mobility, stability, current life choices/circumstances and future goals. We understand that real lasting change has to happen in your heart, literally and metaphorically. We understand that it can’t just be in behavior, you have to fundamentally change your belief. You see, when your heart is healthy, your heart promotes a healthy body. But the change does not start in your heart. It starts with habits and those habits create the condition of your heart.

We are all too aware that the date on our calendar is beginning to reflect the time where many New Year’s resolutions begin to fall by the wayside. You see, you can’t just write down a goal or say it once and hope it will happen. No, life doesn’t work that way. Sorry! In fact, I would go as far as saying, you need to have a healthy hate. We need to hate something so much that our decisions become actions.

I know, I know, I know. Before you get all bent out of shape about promoting hate, hear me out. Far too often we hate what is trying to bring change in our lives and love what is trying to destroy us. Let’s be honest, I love how I feel in the moment when I’m eating a bowl of ice cream, but I hate the crash that comes after. But I also hate how I feel when I am on the Jacobs Ladder, but I love the result. You see how that works? Do you hate the fact that your back hurts too bad to play on the floor with your kids? Do you hate the fact you can’t go hiking with your family because your body will pay a high price? Do you hate the side effects of that medication? Do you hate how your waistline makes you feel about yourself?

Look at it this way; do you hate the pain of procrastination more than you hate the time it takes to prepare? Do you hate feeling fat in pictures more than you hate conditioning days at NAKOA? Do you hate getting bad doctor reports more than you hate deadlifting? Do you hate feeling tired and lethargic more than you hate pushing sleds? I think you get my point by now.

Be honest with yourself. Are you just hoping for change this year or are you actually changing your belief system? Are you creating a belief that is initiated by daily habits that will actually shape the condition of your health and future? Don’t just say you want to be healthy. Know your WHY behind it, write it down and be honest with yourself. What drives your desire to be healthy? Kids? Husband? Travel? etc. When you know why you are doing something, then you can truly hit it hard when the hard times hit.

Get your heart set in the right direction, incline it towards the action of health rather than a hope for health. It’s never too late to get started…come on in!
